Night of the Comet (1984)

When a rare comet fly’s by the earth, the people of the world are turned into red dust leaving a small group of survivors, mainly teenage girls with big hair.  The problem with the survivors is that some of them have been turned into zombies, a problematic issue for those who inherit the earth and all it’s shopping malls as their personal playground.

It’s about what one could expect from a cheesy 80s horror movie.  It’s like a high school girl version of I am Legend or Omega Man.  The movie clearly doesn’t take itself too seriously and is actually amusing in some spots, but overall could probably be compressed into 20 minutes of solid film.

My official rating on this is: Meh…

Zombi 2, aka Zombie, aka Zombie Flesh Eaters (1979)

This is one of the first Italian Zombie movies by Lucio Fulci and it kind of kick started the whole weird Italian horror genre.

Also, there’s some notable scenes such as the Zombie vs. Shark and the infamous eye gouging scene.  Not to mention that the Fulci style zombies are quite gory compared to earlier Romero zombies.  Fulci’s heavy use of live worms in the eye sockets of his living dead seem to be one his signature effects.

Overall, the movie is pretty visual and not that scary in a suspenseful kind of way, it’s more in a creepy gross way.  It’s solid stuff and definitely worth seeing if you’re a hardcore zombiephile.

From the Zombie 2 trailer by Lucio Fulci. It’s definitely a graphic movie.

[REC] 2007 Movie Review

This shaky-cam style zombie flick, is one of the best I’ve seen and was truly a scary movie.  The ending is terrifying especially if your sitting on your couch alone in your darkened apartment.

It’s Spanish and there’s sub titles, but that doesn’t really bother me that much, besides the universal language of sheer horror emitted by the characters pretty much speak for themselves.

The movie is the original to the U.S. remake called Quarantine.  If you haven’t seen either of them yet, it’s probably better to watch REC first, as I hear it’s a lot better.

By the way, the ending to my review gets a little scary itself, so this is warning for those with heart conditions… you’ve been warned:)

New REC 2 Italian Trailer

So Sony, who now owns the distribution rights to [REC]2, is releasing the movie to a bunch of other countries including Italy, however with the one exception of the United States…  what the hell?!

I hope to god they don’t hold off on this in order to make a Quarantine 2, that would suck.  Just give us the damn original foreign film with sub-titles, seriously, I don’t mind that it’s in Spanish…

Zombies! Zombies! Zombies! (2008) Movie Review

I’d say that out of the top two movies in the zombie/stripper sub-genre, this one definitely comes in second.

Which did you like better, Zombie Strippers or Zombies Zombies Zombies?

“Most zombie movies to this point have been small, focusing on a few people in a house. And this has got real scare. You’re in India with hundreds of boats trying to get out of there with a tidal wave of zombies. The scale of what we’re doing here is phenomenal.”

I always thought that there should be a zombie movie that shows the global ramifications of the zombie apocalypse, rather than the typical focus on a small group of survivors.  It looks like World War Z, based on the popular Max Brooks novel will deliver the goods.  I can’t wait!

Dance of the Dead (2008)

You have your jocks, geeks, cheerleaders, punks, underachievers and of course, the SciFi Club.  Combine all of these elements leading up to the high school prom with a toxic sludge leak from the nuclear power plant (which is right next to the graveyard) and you have the recipe for an excellent zombie movie.  Think Sixteen Candles meets Shaun of the Dead.  This is Dance of the Dead.

The purposely hilarious 2008 zombie flick seems to have completely flown under the radar on the zombie scene.  The writing is good, the plot is solid (for a cheesy horror movie) and the effects are great.

The story starts of with the various cliques getting ready for their high school prom.  It’s the whole over the top teen angst thing up until the undead start exploding from their graves.  That’s right, none of this crawling out of the dirt stuff here, these suckers fly right out!

Naturally the SciFi Club is exploring the cemetery at this late hour because they don’t have dates and the only better thing to do is walk around the graveyard.  You’d think this would mean trouble but they actually have the upper hand by being aware of the outbreak at it’s onset.  Their advantage allows them to run around town helping other survivors until they eventually assemble a small platoon of zombie killers to go save the prom.

There’s all kinds of great kill/fight scenes in the movie.  We see bodies sliced in half running around, heads being split open, zombie make-outs and even a zombie frog.  Not to mention the unique ability of the school’s rock band to stave off the dead with a metal version of Pat Benatar’s Shadows of the Night.  Yes, trust me, IT’S AWESOME.

I really have to give Director Gregg Bishop and Writer Joe Ballarini big props on this one, they managed to deliver a great flick on a low budget.  I haven’t had this much fun watching a tongue in cheek zombie movie since Planet Terror.  You won’t want to miss it.

That’s it, that’s your zombie movie.

Have you seen this movie?  What did you think?
